US study shows green roofs slash carbon emissions

AMERICAN scientists have measured the capacity of green roofs in absorbing carbon dioxide.

A recent study has revealed that extensive ‘living roofs’ are able to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and help put a stop to climate change.

According to the Detroit-based study, substituting traditional roofs with rooftop plant life in major urban areas could be equivalent to offsetting the carbon dioxide emitted by 10,000 mid-sized SUVs over the course of a year.

The research cited this was in addition to other green advantages brought about by green roofing such as the reduction of heating and air conditioning needs, stormwater collection and countering heat island effect.

This study has been published in this month’s issue of ACS Publications’ Environmental Science & Technology journal.
