Company carbon footprints are not measured, says IFS research

NEW research commissioned by IFS shows less than half of the companies in the mining and resources industry are measuring their carbon footprints.

The report which surveyed a range of companies in the Australian mining and resources sectors found that only 44% implemented an energy efficiency improvement system.

According to IFS, the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System (NGERS) is a framework which applies to facilities producing 25 kilotonnes (kt) of carbon dioxide or consuming 100 terajoules (TJ) or more of energy.

Despite the lack of adoption for energy report systems, 87% of respondents felt that reducing carbon emissions was important to the industry. Other issues which were considered important include adequate waste management, heritage protection, and compliance and risk management.
