ACCORDING to The Cellulose Insulation Manufacturers Association(CIMA), cellulose insulation is proving to be a solid eco-friendly new alternative to traditional thermal and acoustic insulation, allowing homeowners to recycle and conserve energy.
The insulation is comprised of up to 85% recycled paper content, usually recycled newspaper. The paper is usually shredded and then treated with sodium borate, boric acid or ammonium sulphate to make cellulose insulation fire retardant.
According to CIMA, if all the paper that went to landfills was turned into cellulose insulation, we would save approximately eight million tons of CO2 emissions.
Another green benefit is that cellulose insulation is made locally in most cases, so less energy is required to transport the insulation. Additionally, as with other green insulations, very little energy is needed in comparison with the manufacture of fiberglass or foam insulations.
Furthermore, the R-value for cellulose is higher than the R-value for standard fiberglass.
